Gunj, jelek, prsluk
Costume inspired by gunj, a Serbian traditional clothing piece. The costume was made for the "GUNJ, JELEK, PRSLUK" exhibition, organized by the Ethnographic museum of Belgrade. The exhibition displayed a collection of traditional clothing pieces collected during a course of over a century.
Even though the appearance and function of Gunj diversified since the middle of the 14th century until today, it remained a permanent part of the traditional attire, both in the cities and villages of the whole Balkan Peninsula and Panonian Basin. Gunj is a unisex top piece, made of sheepskin or wool and is recognized as a part of Serbian cultural heritage.
These are contemporary renditions inspired by the traditional piece. My costumes are made out od sustainable and organic materials, using the traditional manufacturing techniques. The goal of this project was to create a contemporary style while using traditional materials and techniques. The yarn is weaved on a loom and further applied conforming to a burlap cut.
