One hundred years of solitude
This novel inspired me to design costumes that will represent the magical lifeworlds of it's characters and their environment, the mystical city of Macondo.
In order to stay faithful to the original rendition of Macondo's citizens I followed Marquez's character building process. Every character displays a costume representing a piece of their personal history. Costumes are made out of predominantly organic materials - burlap, wool and sheepskin. In the Macondo I have perceived, their inhabitants make their clothes by weaving, sewing and embroidering organic materials. I have, therefore, used different craftwork to manufacture and decorate the costumes.
I used same techniques in different ways for each costume to emphasize the characters' shared heritage. By doing this I highlighted an aesthetic uniformity among members of a small ethnic community, Macondo's citizens, which is the case with traditional clothing of every people anyway.
